ten cent dull rose lilac
Lot 62, Canada 1877 ten cent dull rose lilac Small Queen, mint plate block of eight
Lot 62 Canada #40 1877 10c dull rose lilac Small Queen, mint plate block of 8, with full original gum (bit disturbed). The centre block and the lower right stamp are never hinged. There is a 99% complete Boggs Type V plate inscription in the sheet margin at right (perforated through). Plate blocks of the first 10c printing are exceedingly rare, and we did not see any examples in the important Brigham, Nixon or Cantor Small Queen collections. Accompanied by a 1988 Greene Foundation certificate. Unitrade CV$7,750.
Lot 193 — Canada 1874 ten cent Small Queen die proof, dull rose lilac
Lot 193 Canada 1874 10c die proof in dull rose lilac on watermarked thin wove paper, 24x30mm, with two printing guidelines in each corner, also with very clear watermark showing “188” in thick double-lined numerals (likely part of the year of manufacture), extremely fine. Only three 10c die proofs are recorded in this colour, with the watermarked paper example offered here being probably unique. A lovely showpiece which has graced a number of illustrious collections and destined for the best collection or exhibit.
Provenance: Dr. Lewis Reford (1950), Brazer, Morris, Sam Nickle, Bowen “Ten” collection (1995).
