A rare die essay for a value intended to replace the 12½c Large Queen issue. Illustrated in Hillson and Nixon Canada’s Postage Stamps of the Small Queen Era 1870-1897 on page 29. The left stamp shows nearly full “LL” of the watermark. Catalogued as one fine stamp with watermark and one fine without. An extremely rare multiple, ex. Carl Mangold and Ron Brigham and accompanied by a 1964 Royal Philatelic Society (London) certificate. Rsv. $1,300. Unitrade CV$1,700, sold for C$1,350.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

The cover depicts a large eye. Open on two sides and ex. Ron Brigham (with his red handstamp on back), very fine, with great eye appeal. Estimate C$150.

Lot 62 Canada #40 1877 10c dull rose lilac Small Queen, mint plate block of 8, with full original gum (bit disturbed). The centre block and the lower right stamp are never hinged. There is a 99% complete Boggs Type V plate inscription in the sheet margin at right (perforated through). Plate blocks of the first 10c printing are exceedingly rare, and we did not see any examples in the important Brigham, Nixon or Cantor Small Queen collections. Accompanied by a 1988 Greene Foundation certificate. Unitrade CV$7,750.
