Lot 681, Collection of more than 300 covers and cards from Bruce County, 1850s to modern, sold for C$1,462

Lot 681 Collection of well over 300 covers and cards from Bruce County, 1850s to modern, with a good range of material, from many different towns, from all eras. Many covers have advertising or corner cards, also noted some registered, some picture postcards, and there is additional postmark interest such as fancy corks, duplex, squared circles, etc., but all of the town cancels remain unchecked by us for early or late dates. Many online pictures, and a lot well worth viewing in person to better appreciate its contents. Majority of the items are sleeved, many are still priced (up to $75) and we did note faults here and there. Estimate C$300, sold for C$1,250.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 729, Suederland C.W. 1857 unrecorded and unknown post office to Toronto, sold for C$819

Lot 729, Suederland C.W. 1857 unrecorded and unknown post office to Toronto, sold for C$819Lot 729, Suederland C.W. 1857 unrecorded and unknown post office to Toronto, sold for C$819Lot 729 Russell 1857 “SUEDERLAND / C.W” unrecorded and unknown Post Office, a cover mailed Free to Toronto from “SUEDERLAND / C.W” on MR 4 / 1857 / O. Arrived Toronto on MAR.9 and passed through City of Ottawa on MAR.4 (same day as departure). A very interesting postmark, as there are no post offices listed under that name, so one can only guess that this is a spelling error by the postmark manufacturer. The most plausible post office we can think of is Cumberland, and if so, it is logical that the cover would have passed through Ottawa on the same day on its way to Toronto. The Sunderland post office opened several years after this postmark was applied, and the Sutherland post office is in Essex county, and would not have passed through Ottawa. So this may very well be a variant of the Cumberland office postmark, as this town is also one of the few in Canada West that used the basal “O” in its “C.W” instrument. Estimate C$100, SOLD for C$700.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.
