Lot 1239 Collection of Canada Squared Circles in four binders, on stamps, cards and covers, the first binder includes only Type I strikes, with items having an RF of 20, 40, 100, etc. The second binder contains the Province of Québec, third is Maritimes (quite full) and fourth has Western provinces. Each of these three also have good material, with many high RF factors. Stamps range from Small Queens through to the Scroll issue and the quality of the strikes varies, but many are very fine. One of the highlights of this sale is a world-class advanced collection of Great Britain squared circle postmarks, consisting of over 16,000 covers and cards as well as thousands of stamps. The collector diligently sought fully legible and quality strikes, including most of the rare ones, and more common hammers are often found on better items, such as unusual usages and exotic destinations. This collection contains most of the great rarities, much of it originating from the renowned collection of Stanley Cohen. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire material from one of the best collections ever formed.
Finally, we are pleased to offer worldwide country lots from the Jack Gray collection. This collection was received in just under 100 large cartons, and is being offered principally by country, with each lot typically including more than one collection. Jack was a topicalist, and purchased country collections to extract the topical material he needed, and what remains is a very diverse offering. Lot 1139 COLEMAN ONT. squared circle, a partial but strong strike on a 3c Small Queen stamp. RF 220 with three strikes on stamp and two strikes on cover recorded by Kerzner. Accompanied by interesting provenance ephemera, including a 1986 receipt from F.E. Eaton & Sons to Jim Hennok for $4,000, plus four letters (1959 to 1964) between Dr. Whitehead (Letter 1; Letter 2: Page 1, Page 2) and Major Carstairs (Letter 1; Letter 2: Page 1, Page 2) discussing this stamp as well as other squared circles.
