Lot 497, Canada 1862 five cent Beaver on Lady's Mourning Cover, Niagara C.W. to St. Thomas, sold for C$497Lot 497 Canada #15 5c Beaver on 1862 Lady’s Mourning Cover with Socked on the Nose 4-Ring 23, mailed from Niagara C.W on AUG.20.1862 to St Thomas, by G.W.R. (WEST AUG.20) through London (AUG.21) and arrived on AUG.22. The 5c Beaver was at first cancelled by a light Sarnia broken circle, then re-enforced by a 4-ring #23 from Niagara. A very fine cover in all respects. Estimate $150, sold for C$425.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 1146, Canada, group of 55 three cent Large Queen franked covers, 1868-1870, sold for C$1,053Lot 1146 Canada #25 Group of 55 3c Large Queen Franked Covers, 1868 to 1870, all but three are domestic mailings, with 50 single frankings and 5 double weight rates (three are franked with a pair and three are cross-border), all unchecked as per varieties, papers, shades, etc. A large variety of despatch offices, and great interest in postmarks including duplex, ring numerals (2-ring #s 5, 6, 7, 58), c.d.s., RPO, a WAY LETTER, NS grids, also noted an 1868 Barrie registered cover, a mourning cover and some advertising covers. Mixed condition, with faults to a varying degree to most of the covers (or stamps), still overall fine and well worth a close look. Estimate $500, sold for C$900.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 1121 Newfoundland 1911 OHMS mourning cover to USA, sold for $288Lot 1121 Newfoundland #87-88 1911 OHMS Mourning Cover to USA, legal size postmarked 24 Jan 1911 from St John’s with #87a (2) and 88 of the 1910 John Guy issue to Philadelphia. Has an embossed coat of arms on the reverse along with more black mourning lines. A scarce official item, in memory of King Edward VII. Vertical crease, else fine and attractive. Estimate $150, sold for C$250.00 plus buyer’s premium.

Double Weight Cover to Scotland, mourning cover franked with 1c (two pairs) and 3c (2 singles), perforated 11½x12, tied by duplex cancels, paying the 10c double weight pre-U.P.U. preferred rate. Mailed at Québec AUG.10.1877 to Glasgow, Scotland (AUG.23). Faults, including missing backflap, edge wear, small tears and ageing, still a scarce franking for this rate. Estimate $150, sold for C$170 plus buyer’s premium.

As we have done for several auctions now, we group some of the more distinctive postal history items along with the stamps of their time. The following lovely mourning cover is offered early in the Canada section, which takes place this afternoon.

Lot 43 Canada #7 1855 10d blue Cartier on Mourning Cover, mailed at Québec in May, 1857 and addressed to Dundee, North Britain. Red tombstone Packet Letter receiver dated MAY.17.1857 on front, partially over stamp. Stamp, which has four large margins, is tied to cover by a light 4-ring #37. Light overall wear, and missing its backflap, else a very nice cover. Accompanied by a 2013 Greene Foundation certificate stating “stamp may have been removed and replaced.” Unitrade CV$3,000
