Lot 670 Vancouver Island #3 1865 5c rose Queen Victoria Imperforate, used with #35 in grid (Victoria), with sheet margin at left, two large margins and just clear at bottom, fine. Lot 1135, Canada 1863 twelve and a half cent green Victoria on folded cover Toronto to Glasgow, carried on Allan Line
Lot 1135 Canada #18 12½c yellow green Queen Victoria on Folded Cover, mailed from Toronto on DEC.3.1863 (broken circle free strike) to Glasgow, Scotland, with Glasgow Packet Paid receiver dated DEC.20, having been carried on the Allan Line America. The stamp has lovely bright colour and is tied by a Toronto square grid to this blue folded cover. A pristine example of the 12½c Canadian packet rate, extremely fine. Estimate C$300.
Lot 616, 1899 Klondike Gold Rush registered cover, Dawson N.W.T. to Anthracite Alberta
Lot 616 1899 Klondike Gold Rush Cover, mailed registered from Dawson N.W.T. (c.d.s. dated MAR.29.1899) to Anthracite, Alberta (broken circle receiver is dated 26 days later on APR.23) through Victoria B.C. (APR.19 on back) with RPO “/ C. & V.R.P.O / BC” dated APR.21 on back. There are other interesting markings such as “STAMPS FALLEN OFF IN TRANSIT” (probably a 2c and 5c) and “RECEIVED AT VICTORIA B.C. / IN DAMAGED CONDITION” and back shows a neat (coloured) reverse imprint of a 2c purple Queen Victoria Numeral stamp (indicating the cover would have gotten wet at some point), as well as a very fine wax crown seal reading “C.P.R.Y. / B.C.” in red (would have been applied aboard the train to officially seal the cover and its contents). Last but not least is a manuscript note on back in purple reading “Rec’d in bad ord. / open, contents / intact $15 A.T.” – the front also has a note in the same colour pencil reading “P.M. Please Verify”.
The cover is accompanied by a several page original draft of a most fascinating article written by the owner, Louis Sidney Crosby on the cover, and the history of the gold rush surrounding it. The article “A Cover From the Trail of the Ninety-Eight” was published in Topics in September 1951. We also enclose a letter and registered cover from Topics Editor at the time Gordon P. Lewis thanking him for his submission. An interesting glimpse into Canadian philately of the early 1950s. This cover and its contents were put away in 1962 when Mr. Crosby passed, and were discovered in 2017 by his great granddaughter. Estimate C$500.

Lot 297 Canada Collection of Crown Obliterators, mounted and annotated on 6 quadrille pages, with 6 covers plus 17 stamps, from the John Hillson Collections. First is an 1878 registered cover from Berkeley UC, with two strikes of the Holland UN brass intaglio crown seal (Holland changed its name to Berkeley in 1875), a 3c SQ stamp with very fine strike of the Weymouth NS brass intaglio crown seal, an 1897 cover mailed from the Senate with a crown c.d.s. in purple (mailed cross border with 6c SQ), a group of four stamps showing fancy cork crowns, a lovely cover mailed from Victoria BC in 1882 with stamps tied by a very fine strike of the crown in sunburst, another cover mailed Victoria BC in 1881 with same crown in sunburst as well as three stamps bearing same (3c pair, 5c and 6c), a 3c SQ stamp with Halifax curved registered crown, the last two pages show two covers and 8 stamps with the Ottawa crown (with both genuine and forgeries).
