Lot 601, Canada 1885 Morgan Cover with Louis Riel content, sold for C$1,092


Lot 601 1885 Morgan Cover with content related to Louis Riel, mailed to Morgan from Regina ASSA on MAY.7.1885. Cover (quite damaged) was mailed approximately six months prior to his death by hanging (16 November 1885), and approximately one week before he surrendered to Federal authorities and placed into custody. Also included is an original photo of Louis Riel (“carte de visite” by Davis and Sons Montreal, damaged at bottom), a short letter to Morgan explaining what was going on at the time, and a cut out newspaper article dated MAY.5.1885 from Regina reporting on the uprising at Battleford, Sask. Great Canadian ephemera for the serious collector. An identical photo (but in much better condition) was recently sold by a British Columbia auction house for C$600 (but without the provenance documents this lot includes). Estimate $100, sold for C$950.00 plus 15% buyer’s premium.
