Lot 448, 1892 ten cent UPU registered SQ cover to Newfoundland, sold for $1380

Lot 448Lot 448 1892 10c UPU registered cover to Newfoundland, franked with 2c green, 3c vermilion (sulphurated) and 5c green RLS, all tied by fancy cork cancels, paying the 5c UPU letter rate plus 5c registration fee. Mailed from Commanda, Ont. (AUG.25.1892 broken circle) to Heart’s Content, Newfoundland (Sep. 6 receiver broken circle) via Toronto, Halifax and St. John’s. Overall toning, small tears and scissor cut next to the 2c (not affecting stamp), fine. This is the latest of the two recorded covers to Newfoundland bearing a 5c RLS. (Unitrade 36i, 41, F2)

Lot 8Lot 8 ½c to 50c set of ten Small Queens SPECIMEN Overprints, eight values complete to the 10c, each overprinted with a diagonal 2.5x15mm serifed “SPECIMEN” in purple, reading up, of unknown origin. With original gum, hinged, 20c with a thin and a few other values with small flaws, overall fine.

Lot 23Lot 23 Canada 1882 ½c black Small Queen on whitish paper, mint horizontal pair, imperforate between. An exceptionally very well centered pair, with large even margins all round, full original gum, hinged. Our research indicates that this is the best centered pair in existence. Accompanied by a 1986 Greene Foundation certificate. Extremely fine. (Unitrade 34b)
