Lot 1618, Baghdad to Cairo covers, carried on to England and Ireland, sold for C$994Lot 1618 Persia/Iraq 1923-1924 Baghdad to Cairo Covers, first was mailed MAR.30.1923 Baghdad to Cairo then on to England, franked with 6 British Occupation Iraq stamps, fine. Second mailed Teheran on DEC.24.1924 to Dublin, Ireland, franked with 10 Persia stamps depicting Ahmed Shah Qajar (some are on back of cover) with bilingual “BY AIR MAIL BAGDAD-CAIRO” handstamp in purple plus Teheran registration markings, Bagdad c.d.s. on back. This is a very early first First Flight from Iran, carried by a Junkers F13 aircraft were among the world’s best airplanes, from the military and transport point of view. Opened a bit roughly at top, still very fine and unlisted in AAMS. Also includes two 1933 flight covers Baghdad to Stephen Smith in Calcutta India, both with additional “Karachi-Calcutta / First Air Mail” pictorial handstamps on back (these with light stains, else fine). Many of these are mailed to Stephen H. Smith in Calcutta, and 9 of the flight covers are signed by him on the back. Note airmails via Souda Bay, Crete, 1927 flight GB to India covers. Also 1929 covers air to Paris, rail to Athens and then flown to India, as well as 13 July 1st Imperial Airways flown covers including one from Ireland. Many have small faults and includes some oversize covers still overall fine or better and online scans only show a portion. A very interesting lot. Lot 1418, Great Britain postal history collection 1783-1879, sold for C$850Lot 1418 Collection of Early Great Britain Postal History, 1783 to 1879, a lovely and rarely offered collection, the first part being mounted on quadrille pages from 1810 to 1879, starting with Two Penny Post, then Penny Post, with many different postmarks, rates towns and routes, there are sections on England and Wales, Ireland and Scotland. This part (on pages) includes 38 covers or folded letters, 11 of which are stampless, plus another 131 stamps or pieces selected for quality strikes. The second part contains unresearched loose material from 1783 (three folded letters) to the 1840s, with about 40 covers or folded letters (incl a few fronts), most before 1820. Lastly, there are some pages of postmarks (mostly numerals) on about 180 stamps from the 1870s to 1890s. Many covers and folded letters have their contents. Way too many better items or postmarks here to list, but we have scanned about a dozen, and viewing is highly recommended.
