Lot 1145, Canada 1930 Airship cover Montreal to EnglandLot 1145 Canada 1930 R100 Airship Cover Flown from Montreal to Cardington, England. This cover was carried on board the air ship at Montreal by J. Fergus Grant, who was a reporter travelling on the air ship return flight for the Montreal Gazette. The cover is signed by Grant and has a St Hubert AUG.13.1930 datestamp. A few small tone spots at bottom left, still very fine and rare. No backstamps as it was carried out of the mails. It is estimated that fewer than 50 covers were flown, with many to officials, either in Canada or the UK. Offered on a fully written-up exhibit page. Estimate C$1,500.

A Patricia Airways corner card cover flown from Toronto to Red Lake on DEC.18.1926. Back of cover shows a map of the flight path and is franked with a CL13, tied by Red Lake postmark dated DEC.20. Lot 761 Newfoundland #53 1880 5c pale blue Harp Seal, mint with full original gum, never hinged. A fresh and very fine stamp, with bright colour and crisp impression, with blind perf hole at left, accompanied by a 2009 Greene Foundation certificate. A lovely stamp in all respects and rare in this superior quality. An example in extremely fine condition sold for $6,670 in our May 2018 sale. Unitrade CV C$2,500.

This is the better and scarcer black (mourning) cover, with the 10r stamp being sound (white area below it is a white area for affixing the stamp), very fine, rare and highly sought after. Rsv. Lot 1409, Columbia 1919 experimental Flight CoverLot 1409 Columbia #C1 1919 Experimental Flight Cover from Barranquilla to Puerto Colombia, on June 18, 1919. This flight was made by aviator Knox Martin during negotiations for the establishment of regular air service in Columbia. A special 2c stamp overprinted “1er Servicio Postal Aero 6-18-19” which was used on the 160 covers flown. The stamp’s perforations are all intact, which is rare as these were usually cut by scissors. Light vertical crease (as most of these have), still a rare and sought after early pioneering flight cover. The $2,500 catalogue value given is from the 1990 supplement to the American Air Mail Catalogue Vol. 5 and the Scott catalogue value for the used stamp alone is $1,700. Rsv. CV U$2,500.
