Lot 449 — Canada Consular Fee five dollar mint block of 35, realized $1323

Canada #FCF5 mint block of 35
Lot 449 Canada #FCF5 1949-1971 $5 green Consular Fee Stamps, large block of 35 (5×7) from bottom of right pane, fresh, mint never hinged, very fine. Quite likely the largest remaining multiple of this high value. Van Dam CV$9,844, SOLD for $1,150.
Our Canada Revenue section had a rarely-seen offering: several lots of mint Consular Fee stamps in large multiples. According to BNAPS.org: “Consular fee stamps were used abroad at Canadian embassies, consulates, missions and other offices where varying levels of consular services were provided. These services included the following items: letters to foreign authorities, identity and travel papers, verification of signatures, attestation of documents, administration of oaths, translation of documents, issuance of various certificates and administration of estates.” These items attracted spirited bidding, and given the many second and third chances to acquire a nice cache of items, we trust that no interested bidder went home empty-handed. Lot 1317 — Philatelic Literature group of “Name Sale” catalogues, realized $345

Auction #11 featured the widest selection of philatelic literature we have ever offered. We made the decision to separate many titles into individual lots, so that collectors would have a chance to buy select works rather than having to take home a large carton.

This lot, however, was an example of what we sometimes see when many desirable titles are grouped. It was a great chance to efficiently build or improve a library of “name sales,” and saw a strong price as a a result.
