Lot 1409, Columbia 1919 experimental Flight Cover

Lot 1409, Columbia 1919 experimental Flight CoverLot 1409 Columbia #C1 1919 Experimental Flight Cover from Barranquilla to Puerto Colombia, on June 18, 1919. This flight was made by aviator Knox Martin during negotiations for the establishment of regular air service in Columbia. A special 2c stamp overprinted “1er Servicio Postal Aero 6-18-19” which was used on the 160 covers flown. The stamp’s perforations are all intact, which is rare as these were usually cut by scissors. Light vertical crease (as most of these have), still a rare and sought after early pioneering flight cover. The $2,500 catalogue value given is from the 1990 supplement to the American Air Mail Catalogue Vol. 5 and the Scott catalogue value for the used stamp alone is $1,700. Rsv. CV U$2,500.
