Sale 28 Has Finished

Auction #28 is now over. Unaudited Prices Realized from the sale can be seen on Stamp Auction Network or downloaded from our site. Starting on Monday, sparks-auctions.com will begin highlighting some of the better and more interesting realizations from the sale. There is much to talk about, including what are certain to be a few record prices (like the extremely fine 12-1/2c Victoria shown below!).

We are now organizing material and preparing invoices which will take us until next week. Invoices will be sent by e-mail. While we will not usually interrupt our work to take your phone call, all calls and e-mails will be answered as soon as we can provide the information you require. Payment can be made in cash, cheques in CD$ or US$ (we will provide the conversion rate), Mastercard or Visa (2.5% convenience fee applies) or by internet eTransfer or wire (see your invoice for transit details, or check with us).

Buyers who wish to pick up their auction winnings at our offices can do so by appointment beginning on Wednesday, October 3rd. We are not open to the public before that date. Most local customers are aware by now, but we should remind you that we are at new premises at 1770 Woodward Drive in Ottawa. Appointments can be made by e-mail or by telephone starting on Tuesday, October 2nd. While our building is locked on Saturdays, we will try to make arrangements for those who must pick up outside of work hours.

Lot 79 Canada #18ii 1859 12½c green Queen Victoria, Perforated 12, used with an ideal light grid cancel, four very large margins for this notoriously difficult issue, extremely fine. Accompanied by a 2018 Greene Foundation certificate. A great stamp to embellish any serious used Canada collection, catalogue value is irrelevant. Estimate $400, Sold for C$661.25 including buyer’s premium.

Lot 66, Canada 1859 ten cent black brown Consort, used single from first printingLot 66 Canada #16 1859 10c black brown Consort, Perforated 11¾, a used single from the first printing (order 1A), with ideal light cancel and very pleasing centering for this difficult issue. This stamp possesses rich colour and a crisp impression, plus an unlisted re-entry, purported to be from plate position 46 (doubling of top frameline). Corner crease at top left, ending in a small tear at top, still a very fine appearing stamp. Accompanied by a 2009 Greene Foundation certificate. Unitrade CV $8,500.

Lot 312, Sir Sanford Fleming's Essay for rejected three cent stampLot 312 Canada Rejected Three Cent Essay by Sir Sandford Fleming, being one of two original cabinet card photographs submitted by Sir Sandford Fleming to William Mulock (see letter thanking him for it in this lot). The other card is in the National Archives of Canada. It reads “Design for a British Empire Postage Stamp / by S.F. Ottawa June 21st 1898”. The card is also initialed by Fleming on the back. Note the 3 cent rate instead of the eventual two cent rate. This is in line with Mulock’s earlier failed attempt to lower the rate to three cents. The design was submitted prior to the July 1898 London conference where the lower two cent rate was advocated by Mulock. Ultimately Mulock would select the design he assisted Mr. Warren Green with designing. One of four different essays for the Penny Postage stamp in the National Archives of Canada. Also includes an August 1898 Signed Letter From PMG William Mulock to Sir Sandford Fleming, written on Office of the High Commissioner for Canada letterhead, Mulock thanks Fleming for the sketch submitted for the Empire Penny Post scheme. An important historical document between two of Canada’s greatest philatelic personalities. Both items are ex. Fawn. Rsv. Estimate C$2,000.
