Lot 99, Canada 1880s Small Queens with unofficial “Official” overprints, sold for $345

An interesting one that sold for our full estimate.

Lot 99Lot 99 Canada 35/39 1880s 1c to 6c Small Queens with Unofficial Overprints, with diagonal OFFICIAL overprints on 3c, 5c (faulty and repaired) and 6c, plus vertical OFFICIAL overprints on 1c to 6c values, for a total of eight used stamps. Apparently created by Hechler to be used during the Riel Rebellion, these were not authorized but were tolerated by the postal authorities. Scarce. Estimate C$350, Sold for C$300 plus buyer’s premium.

Lot 811, Panama 1918-20 Canal pictorial die proofs from ABNCo, sold for $3680

Lot 811Lot 811 Panama 214P-216P, 218P-219P 1918-20 12c to 1b Canal Pictorial Set of Large Die Proofs, with the five issues, from the American Bank Note Company, each in the colour of issue and die sunk on cards measuring 225 x 150 mm. All have the die number and company name just below the design, and the low value only has the company name. All have a pencil number at bottom right. A very fine, rare and attractive set. Estimate C$1,000, sold for C$3,200 plus buyer’s premium.

Lot 1210, Canada 1915 pair of Military Chaplain postcards, sold for $632

Military postal history always seems to do well, with unexpected rarities sometimes commanding several multiples of our advance estimate.

Lot 1210Lot 1210 1915 World War I Military Chaplain Postcards, includes a 1915 card from the “Senior Canada Chaplain” at No. 5 Canadian stationary hospital in Alexandria, Egypt home to Toronto. Also a 1915 card from Cairo, Egypt with a “Canadian Chaplain” handstamp to Ottawa. Both with creases, but scarce. Estimate $120, sold for C$550 plus buyer’s premium.

Lot 41, Canada 1859 one cent rose Victoria used, perf 11-3/4, sold for $316

Lot 41Lot 41 Canada #14b 1859 1c rose Queen Victoria, perforated 11¾, with margin clear of the design at right and well clear of the outer frameline on three sides. An ideal socked on the nose broken circle of Montreal/PM/MR 27/65/C.E. makes this an appealing example. Collector has identified this as printing 18 and state 5 of the plate. Fine-very fine. Unitrade CV$120, sold for C$275 plus 15% buyer’s premium.
