Lot 619, Canada 1898 ten cent blue green Special Delivery Montréal First Day Cover, sold for C$3,510Lot 619 Canada #E1 1898 10c Blue Green Special Delivery First Day Cover, tied by JUL.1.1898 5pm Montréal Bickerdike flag cancel (very uncommon on special delivery mail) on 2c green Queen Victoria stationery envelope (Webb EN9) paying the 2c drop letter rate plus 10c special delivery fee, fresh and very fine. July 1, 1898 was the first day the Special Delivery was offered in 14 Canadian cities, including Montréal. The sender of this cover obviously recognized the importance of this occasion by preparing the two covers offered in this sale (see previous lot for the other one). Prior to the discovery of the two covers offered in this sale, the earliest recorded use of this stamp was July 2, 1898. An exceptionally rare and important early first day cover, offered to the market for the first time 125 years after its date of issue. Estimate C$500, sold for C$3,000.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

(FEB.12 transit on back). The cover is franked with six 1p stamps (S.G. #53, Scott #57 in a block of four and a pair), all neatly canceled, name of addressee scratched out, else very fine. A scarce franking. Stanley Gibbons £440, sold for C$425.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 619, Canada 1898 ten cent blue green Special Delivery Montréal First Day Cover, sold for C$3,510Lot 641 1883 Snowflake, Manitoba Small Queen Registered Cover, mailed on JUN.27.1883, which is 16 years earlier than the ERD in the PHSC database, so new ERD. The cover is addressed to Winnipeg (JUL.2 receiver) and is franked with a 3c Small Queen (tied by a Lacelle #1138 fancy cancel) and 2c Registered letter stamp (not tied but belongs). Description of route on exhibit page reads “Three different registration numbers suggest renumbering each phase of the routing: Snowflake, Archibald and Emerson. Transported by J. Tees one trip a week to Pembina Crossing / Archibald, then carried by J. Rinn two trips a week on the Boundary Trail to Emerson, then rail to Winnipeg. Postal revenues were $64 in 1883.” Open on three sides and reduced at left, still a nice example of this scarce postmark. Estimate C$100, sold for C$300.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.
