The accompanying Bileski write-up explains that the sheet went through the press once, the clerk noticed the colour had not registered, and then passed it through again, this time incorrectly aligned. This lovely stamp has four huge margins, showing part of adjoining stamp on one side, and possesses deep, rich colour. There is a tiny tone spot (in the margin only), mentioned for strict accuracy, and not mentioned in two of the certificates. Accompanied by a 1981 Peter Holcombe (Switzerland, with signature on stamp), 1983 Enzo Diena (Rome, with signature on stamp) and 2019 Greene Foundation certificates. This stamp is from the famous Senator Calder collection and more recently from the Highlands collection sale, where it was described using the qualifiers “incomparable”, “phenomenal”, “striking”, “superb”, “premium quality” and “gem”. 962 German States—Hamburg #9, 12, 22, 23 */** 1864-65 Lot of Mint Issues, with #9 (total of 24 stamps in singles, pairs and blocks, with at least 5 different shades), 12 (two pairs and a single in three different shades), 22 (total of 45 stamps in singles, pairs and blocks) and 23 (total of 19 stamps in various multiples). There are a great variety of shades here, including some not listed in Scott, so we counted the catalogue value as all cheapest major shade only. The great majority of these are mint never hinged, with a few of the early imperforates being hinged. We have carefully examined these using the Scott and Schloss descriptions on how to identify reprints, and are fairly confident they are regular issues, but we still recommend careful examination or viewing the scans we have online.
