Lot 1232, Canada 1944 Air Letter “Missing In Action” from a mother, sold for $173

lot-1232Lot 1232 Canada 1944 Air Letter. A Worried Mother’s NOV.22.1944 Air Letter to her son who had already been “KIA” on July 19, 1944. F/O Kenneth Urquhart was killed in action when his Halifax bomber #LL364 of 138 RAF Sqn collided with a US bomber on a supply drop. His mother wrote him this very sad letter 4 months after his death of which she still had not been advised. In her letter she writes “…if I only had news of you big boy my cup of happiness would be full—but we must just wait and pray.” and “Well I must close sonny boy. God keep you wherever you are is the prayer of your old mother.” Air letter has the normal markings of a ‘MIA’ letter and was returned through MPO 304 on JAN.15.1945. It seems the mother might have blackened out the “Reported Missing” handstamp when the letter was returned. Small cover faults do not detract from letter which offers a glimpse of the emotional suffering families endured when their loved ones went off to war, and especially when they went missing in action. Estimate $75, sold for C$150 plus buyer’s premium.
