This stamp was prepared for the 1862 International Exhibition and never put into use. Very few of these stamps exist in private hands, especially with full original gum and with four large to well clear margins. The stamp has a small filled-in thin, still a lovely and very fine appearing example of this sought after first stamp of Vancouver Island. The stamp has partially erased expert signatures on back, including that of Alberto Diena, and is accompanied by a 1989 Philatelic Foundation certificate. Rsv. 5,500. Unitrade CV$24,000.

Lot 255, Vancouver Island five cent rose uprating a ten cent green Washington stationery cover, sold for $3105Lot 255 Vancouver Island #5 1868 Wells Fargo & Co. cover, being a 10c green Washington stationery cover, mailed at Victoria on April 3, 1868 (docketing at left), uprated with a 5c rose perforated QV adhesive (sheet margin at right and showing part of stamp at top and bottom), tied by a #35 in grid (in blue), addressed to San Francisco, received there on April 7th, as evidenced by docketing at left, which also mentions this letter contained a draft for $400. A lovely and desirable cover, in very fine condition and accompanied by a 2015 Greene Foundation certificate. Ex. Jack Wallace. Estimate $3000, sold for C$2,700 plus buyer’s premium.
