Lot 554, Canada 1898 two cent Map Stamp on cover from Montréal paying circular rate to Toulouse, FranceLot 554 Canada #85 DEC.20.1898 2c Map Paying Circular Rate to France, a lovely yellow Solicitors of Patents corner card cover mailed from Montréal on DEC.20.1898 (Bickerdike flag cancel is dated well before the official DEC.25 day of issue) to Toulouse, France, franked with a single 2c Map with sheet selvedge at left, leaving a nice white space for the machine dater. The envelope backflap is unsealed and still retains its original gum, a pristine and attractive cover, as well as a scarce use of this stamp to pay the printed matter rate to France. Estimate C$150.

Lot 351, Canada 1898 two cent Map Stamp First Day Cover, MontréalLot 351 Canada two cent Map Stamp, December 7, 1898 First Day Cover, mailed from Montreal (Bickerdike machine at 1pm) to Montreal, received there at 10pm (Bickerdike hub on back), attempted delivery (DEC.7 carrier marking), address changed to a local post office box in purple crayon and re-despatched (for free) Notre Dame St. West L.C.D. next morning at 7am. Small corner fault bottom left, still a very fine example of this first day of use for the Map stamp in combination with a 2c drop letter rate, with very few known. Rsv. Ottawa” inscription in selvedge at top. A lovely stamp with deep rich blue oceans and very pleasing eye appeal, but with a hint of gum toning, still very fine. Next day receiver on back. A large cover, with a tear at left and a vertical crease, still a scarce rate and stamp combination. Estimate $75, sold for C$170 plus buyer’s premium.
