Lot 116, Canada 1872-73 two cent deep green Small Queen, first Ottawa printing, XF NH, sold for C$1,521Lot 116 Canada #36 early 1872-73 2c Deep Green Small Queen, Perforated 11.85, First Ottawa Printing, mint with full pristine original gum, never hinged, well centered amongst four large margins with “Post Office” fresh colour, extremely fine. An exceptionally rare stamp in this condition, as very few 2c stamps were printed during the First Ottawa printing period (limited to 1872-73 for the 2c value). Despite not having its own Unitrade number, this stamp is highly sought after by connoisseurs, and this may well be the finest example known, as we do not recall seeing a premium never hinged example of this stamp having been offered anywhere. Estimate $500, sold for C$1,300.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

From the John Hillson Collections, accompanied by a drawing from Hillson showing the re-entries he found on the stamp. A difficult stamp to find in such nice condition. Unitrade CV$1,000, sold for C$1,150 plus 15% buyer’s premium.

A truly exceptional example of this dramatic error, with large margins and ideal centrally cancelled with a crisp and clear Louise Bridge, Manitoba datestamp, JA.12.1897 (post office open 1896 to 1910). Lot 99Lot 99 Canada #36 1877 2c Small Queen on Complete Valentine Cover, mailed Ottawa FEB.14.1877 (St. Valentine’s Day) and addressed locally. Franked by a deep green 2c Small Queen (probably affixed with glue, thus stained) paying the double weight drop letter rate and tied by Ottawa fancy geometric cancel. A lovely and scarce embossed cover, with a few small tears and overall light toning. Ex. Tong. Estimate $350.
