Lot 1161 STONEHOUSE / DEVON squared circle, an extremely fine (proof like) despatch strike F / JA 7 / 81 (earliest known unreported date) on a 1d QV cover, with Taunick (JA 7) and Washford (JA 8) receivers on back. Part of backflap torn, still a lovely example of this rare Plymouth Office hammer, which was given a rarity factor of 450 in the Handbook, with only one further report in a Supplement. Estimate $300.
Lot 1184 LONDON E.C. (Experimental) squared circle, a very fine strike of Type 3 (Figure 69 on page 281 of Handbook) dated AX / OC 30 / 90 on an uprated stationery card to Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, with receiver on front. The Handbook only reports one other strike (dated OC 1 / 91) so this could be one of only two known. Very fine, quite rare and desirable. Estimate $500.
Lot 1218 SHERBROOKE QUE. Hammer II squared circle, a light strike 12 NOV on a pair of 3c carmine rose Karsh stamps, being the latest reported date (unconfirmed in Handbook), even though the year is missing. This stamp was issued on May 1st, 1953 so it should be later than that at least. Only two or three strikes reported, RF 200. Estimate $350, sold for C$850.00 plus 15% buyer’s premium.
Today begins the bulkiest but potentially most interesting part of the sale. We will see some great prices in the first few minutes, where we feature complete Canada collections that could well have been broken down into individual lots. Lot 1605 is a quite complete, clean, collection of Canadian revenues that will sell for more than $2000. A Winnipeg squared circle collection follows two lots later:
