Lot 43 — Canada Ten pence blue Cartier on mourning cover, Quebec to Dundee

As we have done for several auctions now, we group some of the more distinctive postal history items along with the stamps of their time. The following lovely mourning cover is offered early in the Canada section, which takes place this afternoon.

Lot 43 Canada #7 1855 10d blue Cartier on Mourning Cover, mailed at Québec in May, 1857 and addressed to Dundee, North Britain. Red tombstone Packet Letter receiver dated MAY.17.1857 on front, partially over stamp. Stamp, which has four large margins, is tied to cover by a light 4-ring #37. Light overall wear, and missing its backflap, else a very nice cover. Accompanied by a 2013 Greene Foundation certificate stating “stamp may have been removed and replaced.” Unitrade CV$3,000

Lot 618A — Used Newfoundland two penny Heraldic pair on thick paper

Lot 618ALot 618A Newfoundland #2 1857 2d scarlet vermilion Heraldic, Thick Paper, a very scarce and expensive issue which is very rare in any multiple. This pair has a deep colour and the cancels are lighter than usually found on the first issue of the colony. It is attractive with evenly spaced margins which are well clear of the design and in places touch or are just into the outer frameline. A world-class rarity in great quality. Lot 32 & 63 — Canada Three penny Beaver and Six pence Consort, both with stitch watermark

Lot 32Lot 32 Canada #4x 1852 3d brown red Beaver with Stitch Watermark, used with bold, centrally struck 4-ring #21 (Montreal) cancel. The stitch watermark is vertical. From position 30 of Pane B (in pencil on back), and thus with sheet margin at right showing large part of imprint “…on, Wright, Hatch, & Edson. Ne…”. Margin is cut into slightly at upper left, else a very nice example with many attributes. Accompanied by a 1996 Saskatoon Stamp Centre certificate. Unitrade CV$1,000

Lot 63Lot 63 Canada #13i 1859 6d brown violet Consort with Stitch Watermark, used, with light cancel, with stitch watermark running across width of stamp. Usual centering, and a rare stamp, with apparently only 3 known to exist. Accompanied by a 2013 Greene Foundation certificate. Unitrade CV$5,000
