56Canada #18O1859 12½c yellow green Queen Victoria, a lovely used block of eight, tied to piece by several strikes of the Brantford CW duplex dated AUG.21.1867. The stamps are clearly from positions 1-4, 11-14 as evidenced by the printer’s imprint in top margin and unique centering. Because of its large size, this block was instrumental in helping determine the single-plate theory for this value. Once belonging to Brig. Studd, it was studied by himself as well as Jarrett, Senator Calder, Lee-Jones and others, as evidenced by the accompanying article by Peter J. Hurst published in the October 4, 1952 Weekly Philatelic Gossip magazine. We know only of one or more blocks of four and a strip of four, leaving this as likely the largest known multiple. A few insignificant faults, still a must have for the Cents or classics collector. $4,025.00
